All Blacks Push Acorn
|Saturday saw the New Earswick All Blacks take on York Acorn in the delayed 2017 York & District Cup Final, at Thanet Road.|
Having narrowly lost to NCL Division 2 opposition last week, this pre season final gave the All Blacks another test against NCL opposition, this time from Division 1, and were looking to build on last weeks performance.
New Earswick started the stronger taking an early lead after a couple of good defensive sets a fine attacking move followed, with Tom Barron being held up just short of the line, a sweeping move from right to left saw Tommy Hields flick a perfect pass to his wing partner Dean Smith to stroll in unopposed, Connor Calam couldn't convert.
Then followed another couple of good percentage sets from the All Blacks which saw them held just short of the line and a classic hooker play from Jack Carling, saw him go on the short side where he put 17 Year Old centre George Hunt through a hole to dive his way to 4 points.
An almost perfect 20 minutes for the All Blacks, ended in joy for Acorn as NEAB were penalised for a strip in the tackle and a quick tap from 5m saw them waltz through the defence for a converted try. - The momentum had changed and NEAB were pegged back in their 10m for 6 tackles until a Tom Barron perfectly executed a sliced clearance kick, which was gathered by George Hunt, who found Mark Hayes, who in turn passed it to the flying Ben Stoker, who ran 60 meters to the corner for another score.
But the half finished in Acorns favour, with another quick tap seeing them get over the whitewash again and then more disappointing was the fact, after a failed drop goal attempt from NEAB that Acorn went 100m with the final set off the half to score, and go into the break leading.
The second half turned into a classic cup tie, with some good rugby, good defence and tempers boiling over. Acorn flew out the blocks scoring another converted try, however All Blacks fought their way back into the match and another George Hunt try with 15 minutes to go, after some handbags seeing 2 Acorn players sin-binned as well as Adam Caddie, put New Earswick back into contention, but Acorns experience told as they saw the game out and scored 2 quick fire tries in the final 5 minutes to seal victory and bragging rights.
Jack Stearman commented on the performance "We came off the field disappointed after being in the contest for so long, but we were playing a strong Acorn side and our boys put up a fantastic fight. We have learnt a lot from today and can take a lot of positives from the game and are now looking forward to getting back out on the field next week against Nottingham. Fair play to Acorn, they came out on top and deserved the victory in the end and we wish them luck for their season and hopefully see them later in the season."
New Earswick's Man of the Match was back rower Joe Hudson who ran aggressively all day, in only his second game in 5 years, closely followed by George Hunt and captain Jack Carling.
We take on Nottingham Outlaws in our first home fixture of 2018 on Saturday 3rd March - 2pm Kick Off at White Rose Avenue.

York & District Cup Final 2017 Match Preview: York Acorn Vs New Earswick All Blacks
|The 2017 York Cup Fnal takes place at York Acorn this Saturday after last years postponement.|
Following on from last weeks narrow loss, this pre season fixture will on end again see NEAB come up against NCL opposition in another tough test for the young Blacks squad.
Head Coach Stearman said of this weekends game "It was good to get back out on the field last week and we played some good rugby, but we are still in pre season and are working towards our seasons goals. It will be another tough test this week and a local derby so should be a good contest, but we will once again be focusing on individual performances"
This game is the last weekend before the All Blacks kick off their defence of the 40/20 cup title on the 3rd of March and Stearman could yet rotate and give more players their first run out of the season.
Tom Barron, Bobby Smith and Dean Smith are in contention for this weekend, while Club Captain Adam Kirby is out due to work commitments, with a few others overcoming knocks from the Hull Dockers game.
The game kicks off at 2pm at Thanet Road

Hields gets 4 try haul in NEAB mauling of Lions
RD2 Yorkshire Mens League Forty/20 Cup.
Good weather and pitch conditions met the New Earswick All Blacks travelling 18 at the Mill Pond Stadium in Featherstone and they wasted no time in getting on the score board.
Tommy Hields going over after 4 mins on the left after good hands. Tom Holmes converted. 0 −6.
New Earswick kept the pressure on and after two tip tackles on Sean Malarkey went unpunished by the referee a scrum on New Earswicks 20m line, Liam Gargan starting an attack down the left, finished the move just left of the sticks on the 20min mark, Tom Holmes converting 0 −12.
5mins later Man of the Match Tom Barron broke through two would be tacklers to score under the posts. Tom Holmes converted. 0 −18.
Next to get over the line was Alex Wilkins in his first game back for over a year brushed aside the Featherstone defence 40m out to race clear and place the ball under the posts, Tom Holmes successful with the boot 0 −24.
Featherstone then got on the score sheet with a kick to the corner just before half time, missing the conversion 4 −24.
HALF TIME 4 −24.
As the second half got underway the Lions tested the All Blacks defence with a five minute spell camped on their line, helped partially by the referee however the New Earswick defence held firm.
On 50mins New Earswick would extend their lead considerably, Tommy Hields 3 tries in 10mins all after good structure gave and an exceptional take from a Tom Barron kick saw the score go to 4 −38 Tom Holmes converting 1 of the 3.
After causing the Lions defence problems all afternoon Prop Dan Atkinson got over for his 2nd and 3rd in 2 games, Tom Holmes converting the first, the second conversion narrowly missing. 4 −48.
The Lions looking particularly tired the referee came to their rescue blowing the whistle 6mins from time to close the game out.
Jack Stearman had this to say;
"I liked what I say today; the lads stuck to the game plan and put in to practice the things we have been focussing on in training".
"We could have got bogged down when the Lions tried to slow the game and drag us into confrontation but we kept our heads and played our own game".
"There are a few things that we need to work on and we will address that at training in the week, but Im happy that players know what they need to improve on and we can work with that".

Featherstone Lions A v New Earswick All Blacks
Kick Off 14:30
Firstly I would like to thank everyone that attended last week and witnessed the great result for us and the club.
Beating a strong Acorn A side in Round 1 was a great way to kick off our campaign and watching our A team made up predominantly of youngsters put a really good display against York Lokos first team. Physicality won on the day but the talent on show and performance put in by our lads cannot be over shadowed.
After last week I am looking forward to travelling to our opponents Featherstone Lions A in Round 2, as again this will be unchartered territory for us and again a test. Featherstone Lions have produced some superstars after being founded in 1994 with the likes of Tom Briscoe, Zak Hardaker and Joe Westerman to name just a few that have gone on to play elite level rugby.
Their rise through the ranks of the NCL as a club has been testament to the set up they have there being promoted to NCL Division 1 in 2016.
Head Coach Jack Stearman will be taking a strong side following last week his squad will be from the 20 players listed below.
He said this of the Round 2 tie;
"It went well last weekend didnt it? "
"Acorn are a good outfit and gave us a really good game."
"Sets up a replay nicely in the near future. "
"We have to stay grounded and not get carried away. Fev Lions lost last week to Farnley Falcons so they will be looking to get a home win this weekend and we have to be on top form again. "
"After last week everyone is desperate to play against the calibre of opponent we had last week. Training has gone well with a good session on both Tuesday and Thursday and has been difficult cutting the squad to 20. "
For anyone wanting to attend the game we are meeting at Knavesmire Road at approx. 12:30pm for a set off time of 12:45pm, the postcode for Featherstone Lions is WF7 5HL.
I look forward to seeing you on Saturday.
